The International Street Fair

The City of Orange was looking for something to do in celebration for it's one hundreth year in 1973. Inspired by the Orange Street Fair of 1910 it was decided that for the centennial celebration Orange would have an International Street Fair. The fair was so successful that it has become an annual tradition for the Labor Day weekend ever since. The main location for the fair is in the Plaza Park area. The streets aaround the Plaza re closed to auto traffic from Friday evening through Sunday evening, so that everyone can wander around on foot and have a great time.

The International Street Fair provides a great forum for various local groups to present themselves to the community and raise funds for their programs and enterprises. Every year there are many different ethnic groups represented in the Street Fair. They provide food, entertainment and crafts to the fair visitors. Many of these groups present themselves in their native or chosen lands ethnic costumes and have made the Street Fair famous for it's wide variety of foods reflecting different cuisines from all over the world.

At the 27th International Street Fair in 2000 over 800,000 people attended. There were fifteen streets designated with themes from divergent nations around the world. Each year the judges choose winners, based on authenticity, food, music, decorations and costumes. In 2000, first place was taken by the Dutch street, closely followed by the Norwegian and American streets. While the judges make their selections, the visitors have their own ways and means of choosing. You can wander all over, but you'll most likely have your own personal favorites. Your choices may even be based on what antiques you found or where the fun seemed to pervade. See the world without ever leaving the streets of Old Towne Orange.
